Rumor has it that Rx-7 will be returning in the near future. When I first heard this news I was estatic, after all

who wouldn't welcome an updated balls out sports car like the rx-7. The rx-8 has brought much shame to the rx family - at least amongst performance oriented enthusiasts; and it is time to bring back the glory. Immersed in the thought of a new Rx-7 I got on my computer (actually I was already on my computer) and searched, and searched. I ran in to a couple sources but like a doctor telling you that you are going to die, I needed a second, third and fourth opinion. You see, the few sources I came across spoke blasphemous words of electric motor and 2+2 seating on a Mazda 5 platform. How can this be? This is worse than bringing a hot chick home from the bar only to find out she is a dude (I do not speak from experience).

So for now, my hopes of a new bad a-ss rx-7 are down in the crapper. Blue Balls at its worst.

1. I've heard thru my source that New RX-7 is currently being tested and is suppose to be as fast as the upcoming Nissan Skyline on the track. One thing Mazda always knew how to do is suspension set up... Maybe its not the fastest straight line car in the world but it sure does handle well.. and I think anyone with any generation RX car will agree. I personally don't really care too much about going straight line... Its only fun for a little while, but thats it.

2. Thanks Herb, that info makes me feel a little better - hopefully the new rx-7's suspension setup will be it's saving grace, although its going to need more than good suspension in my opinion

From the article that I found on the link above, I read that same info your talking about. But I don't see how an electric is so terrible. The electric engine helps out in the lower rpm, thus troque. Also it says another electric engine, will spool the turbo at low range and produce more boost, lowering emissions. I don't have any clue why they would use a van platform though.

Engine: 1.3-liter Wankel rotary

Horsepower: 260 (CG estimate)

Torque: 200 (CG estimate)

Transmission: six-speed manual, six-speed automatic

4. you should check out the 2012 rx9... something about 3 rotor, and ~300 or so hp

5. It's supposed to be built on a stretched and widened MX-5 (Miata) platform, not the Mazda5 platform. If I remember correctly, the Mazda5 and Mazda3 share the same platform.

7. The mazda5 platform is running on front wheel drive, but is also used in the european ford focus' and they run in both front and all wheel drive so a rear wheel drive platform could be done. But anyways by the time the rx7 does come ot then that platform would be do for a rehaul anyways. It looks like they're really only trying to tune out the engine so they get it ready to go against the gt-r and the future supra.
