A drifting event entails many things. The second you enter the gate you know there is going to be a sizable amount of modified tuner cars, billows of tire smoke and insane racing action. You know there is going to be a ton of close calls and almost as many crashes, this is all a given, but when the weather doesn't play along; things become just a little more interesting.
Going into the D1 Finals, Nobushige Kumakubo led by only 3 points, trailing close behind was Ken Nomura. To add to the intensity, an uncommon rain fall hit hard right before the singles competition started.
We were treated with an unscheduled half hour practice run so the drivers could get used to the track conditions and new suspension setups. Needless to say the action was incredible and so were some of the crashes.
Fresh out of a number one qualifying spot at the D1 Las Vegas Invitational, Tanner Foust was ready to push the limits. Coming into the second turn at blazing fast speeds, the wet track got the best of him and he crashed hard into the wall breaking what looked to be at least one of his front passenger side control arms. This was just one of the many crashes the D1GP finals had in store for its dedicated fans who stuck it out through the rain.
Although a little out of place, Samuel Hubinette and his 600hp Dodge Charger displayed some nice drifting style coming with in inches of the back wall blowing up banners and advertisements with wind and exhaust.
When all was said and done, Nobushige Kumakubo was ensured the title when Kazama defeated Nomura in the quarterfinals and Kazuhiro Tanaka took the event by defeating teammate KumaKubo in the semifinal round.
