Shifting Tech

Mis-shifting has become common place with today's new close ratio transmissions. Here are some good techniques to keep you from mis-shifting.

Mis-shifting has become common place with today's new close ratio transmissions, especially when you add a short shifter and custom shift knob.  I know when I first got my close ratio six speed transmission, mis-shifting from fifth to fourth, or even sometimes second, was as common as a correct fifth to sixth gear shift.  Here are some good techniques to keep you from mis-shifting.

1-2 Shift

1.)When shifting from first gear to second gear, place the palm of your hand on the inside of the shift knob and apply pressure towards the drivers side of the shifter while shifting downwards.

2-3 Shift

2.) Shifting from second to third. Wrap your hand around the shift knob applying slight pressure on your thumb towards the passenger side of shifter while shifting upwards.

3-4 Shift

3.) Shifting from third to fourth is a big problem area.  Putting it into second instead of fourth is all to common.  And when your shifting at 8600rpm's an accidental down shift is the last thing you want. This may feel a little uncomfortable at first.  Place the palm of your hand on the inside of the shifter and apply slight pressure towards the passenger side of the shifter while shifting downwards.

4-5 Shift

4.) A fourth to fifth gear shift is much like a second to third gear shift. Wrap your hand around the shift knob applying slight pressure on your thumb towards the passenger side of shifter while shifting upwards.

5-6 Shift

5.) And a fifth to six gear shift is much like a third to fourth gear shift. Place the palm of your hand on the inside of the shifter and apply slight pressure towards the passenger side of the shifter while shifting downwards
